"In the Beginning . . . . God"

 Genesis 1:1

Some foundational truths of our faith & guidance for the New Year-2014

What the Bible teaches us about creation:
1. There was a Beginning
2. God is Eternal
3. God brings meaning out of Chaos
4. God is the Source of Creation

APPLICATIONS:

1. If God is at the Head of the Universe, He should be at the Head of Our lives. If God did indeed create the world, it means He is our superior. He is owed our devotion and respect. If He is the Designer, then He knows how things work the best and so His instructions are far superior to the opinions of men. This means we should use Him as our reference point. He is the one we should measure our lives by.

Many of us go into the New Year with goals for lots of things weight loss, exercise, finances, overcoming various vices ,business…But . . . what goals do we have for strengthening our spiritual life? How deliberate are we in building our spiritual life? You can work as hard as you want... and be as diligent as you want... but if you "don't sharpen your ax" you will drift away from God. It is surprising how many good and innocent things can impede our spiritual growth. It could be our love for reading, or gardening, the Internet, sports, our jobs and even our family.

In the beginning . . . . .God!  Put God first this year.

The Most Important Decision of your life

Luke 12:49-59

49 “I have come to set the world on fire,
and I wish it were already burning!

The reference to fire suggest judgment. Jesus’ coming is like a fire. You can ignore it and you will perish or You can get on the right side of it and it will purify the dross out of your life. You have to deal with it or it will consume you!

50 I have a terrible baptism of suffering ahead of me,
and I am under a heavy burden until it is accomplished.

Contentment

Phil.4:10-13

What is contentment?
Contentment is the belief that I have everything I need at this present moment.
It is also the confidence & certainty that when I need anything else, God will give it to me.

I almost certainly don’t have everything I want. And I probably don’t have everything I think I need. This part of the definition means that God has so ordered the universe that no matter where you are right now you have everything you truly need to be content.

That’s an awesome statement—and I know it’s one thing to say that on Sunday morning, it’s something else to believe that when your husband or wife or child walks out on you or the doctor says, “I’m sorry. There’s nothing else we can do.”

How do we know this is true? We know it because God has said it is true.

The Cry for Unity

 Ephesians 4:1-6

The Apostle Paul is answering in Ephesians 4 about the fundamental nature and purpose of the church, and its relationships to the world in which it must live. You will recognize these as pertinent questions of the present hour as well.

We are being told today that the church is irrelevant -a useless appendage to a society which has long outgrown the need for the church.

There are others who say that the church is very much needed in this hour, but it must change its approach if it is going to be meaningful in our generation.

The church does not have the right to chart its own course. Its goal has already been set;
its purpose has been determined by its Lord. Paul puts it this way,

Be Faithful Stewards

(Luke 12:35-48)

Perspective is crucial. A couple who saves prudently now for their children's future education or for their own retirement lives prospectively. That kind of perspective is harder, because it requires faith and counts on events that have not yet occurred. It is very different from living strictly according to present needs and gratification.

Believers know that Jesus is returning and that all will give an account for their stewardship. Jesus gives a series of three images to underline the importance of living prospectively.

1. The parable of being prepared (vv. 35-38),
2. The parable of waiting for the Son of Man (vv. 39-40)
3. The parable of the kinds of stewards (vv. 41-48)

Priesthood

Intro:

In the book of Old Testament, Leviticus, we are learning the great truth which time and again in the course of history seems to be lost and then recovered again

-- this marvelous truth of the priesthood of every believer in Jesus Christ.

In Lev. Chapter 9,  we saw the results of priesthood.

When everything was done "as the LORD commanded" the result was a manifestation of the presence of God, a remarkable shining forth of the glory of the Lord.

We concluded with a great scene of triumph.

The Shekinah glory, a radiant cloud of light, suddenly appeared in the midst of the people of Israel and consumed the rest of the sacrifice in a flash of flame. The people, awed and amazed, shouted and fell on their faces, crying out in triumph.

But the amazing thing is that we now move immediately from that scene of triumph into a scene of tragedy. On the very day that this tremendous breakthrough occurred in the camp of Israel,
tragedy strikes and a sudden and shocking manifestation of judgment occurs.

Does Jesus Live in Folsom?

Galatians 5:19-26

What if Jesus came to Folsom, Sacramento? What would he do? What would he say?

Today’s young people by the millions have asked the question through those cloth bracelets with four capital letters: WWJD. What would Jesus do? “Jesus Walks on This Place. Will you meet him this week?” Does he still walk the earth today? Do we think it impossible that Jesus would come to S?

Our passage is a backdoor to the question I am asking.

In Galatians 5:19-26 we are invited to consider two different ways of life. One is called the “acts of the sinful nature” or the “works of the flesh.” It describes what life looks like without God. Or to say it another way, what happens when you decide to go your own way all the time.

The Priestly Blessing

Numbers 6:22-27

22 Then the Lord said to Moses,
23 “Tell Aaron to bless the people of Israel with this special blessing:
24 ‘May the Lord bless you and protect you.
25 May the Lord smile on you and be gracious to you.
26 May the Lord show you his favor and give you his peace.’
27 Whenever Aaron bless the people of Israel  in my name, I myself will bless them.”

The context: Before this blessing is given, the children of Israel are assembled, getting ready to leave on a dangerous journey across the desert.

What will the people of God doubt in the wilderness?

Many of them were going to die in the wilderness.
assaulted by enemies. face thirst and starvation.
 to face division and dissension.

What are you going to be doing in ETERNITY?

Luke 12:13-21

What will you be doing 100 years from now ?

Everyone of us is going to being doing one of two things 100 years from now.

Serving the Lord Jesus in all of eternal glory – or

Suffering in the tormenting flames of hell.

For that reason alone – the question I ask is a serious question.
We would rather leave it light & uncertain because that keeps us from the responsibility of having to change & get serious about the here & now.

But Jesus would say the opposite: We must think about and be concerned with and focus on ETERNITY.

13 someone called, “Teacher, please tell my brother to divide our father’s estate with me.” 14 Jesus replied, “Friend, who made me a judge over you to decide such things as that?”
Jesus has a way of getting to the root of problems/the heart of the matter.

100 years from now where would you be?

John 3: 11-17

-How would you answer that question?

-Obviously we’ll say we’ll be 6 feet under,

-but are we really be dead…if we have a spirit? Where will our spirit go?

-Some people believe they’ll be reincarnated…into a colorful butterfly, a  magnificent eagle soaring up in the air or … a  crawling snake, or cockroaches w/c people dislike …depending on their karma or what they have done in this world….

-Some don’t believe in the afterlife…this life is all there is…and after that they’re gone, nil, nada, that’s it so they eat, drink, & get merry for tomorrow they die.

100 years from now where would you be?

Staying Confident Through Problematic Times

Encouragement in our Life’s Journey

INTRO: Sometimes we need a booster in Life’s Journey

Ex. Of Paul-  Here is a man who has been rejected, ridiculed, beaten down, battered, & criticized.

2 Cor.11: 23 … I have served him far more! I have worked harder, been put in prison more often, been whipped times without number, and faced death again and again.

24 Five different times the Jewish leaders gave me thirty-nine lashes.

25 Three times I was beaten with rods. Once I was stoned. Three times I was shipwrecked.Once I spent a whole night and a day adrift at sea.

26 I have traveled on many long journeys. I have faced danger from rivers and from robbers. I have faced danger from my own people, the Jews, as well as from the Gentiles. I have faced danger in the cities, in the deserts, and on the seas. And I have faced danger from men who claim to be believers but are not.

27 I have worked hard and long, enduring many sleepless nights. I have been hungry and thirsty and have often gone without food. I have shivered in the cold, without enough clothing to keep me warm.

28 Then, besides all this, I have the daily burden of my concern for all the churches.

Love God, Love Others

Deuteronomy 5:1-21

The reason most folks struggle with the Ten Commandments is that they have never established a personal relationship with the Author.

It was these commandments that would draw God's people
into conformity with his pure character and
draw other nations around them into his perfect plan of salvation.

1st  v.7 You shall have no other gods before me.
In light of that relationship of loyalty to God, we should not worship any created person or being, for that would come between his love for you and your love for him.
If you want to live a life, one that is filled with peace, joy, and wholesomeness, then worship the true Author of life, the one and only living God. Don't give your life over to nongods such as position, power, and possessions. Don't turn to family, friends, networking, psychics, self-help philosophies, new-age philosophies, health and wealth religions, etc.

Fear God not Man

This sermon was preached on July 21, 2013.

(Luke 12:1-12)

The pressure of the Pharisees' example, along with the rise of persecution,
prompts Jesus to warn his disciples about whose opinion they value.
Peer pressure is a given in any culture. The power of those who seek conformity is very strong.
Persecution methods can be strong, controlling and painful.
Economic pressure was also sometimes applied, along with social ostracism.

1. Fear God not man so you won’t live a double life.
Jesus had a very large following. Evidently its size kept increasing.

v.1  ..crowds grew until thousands …“Beware of the yeast…their hypocrisy.
Popularity can breed a desire to remain popular and thus to soften the hard truth of our sinfulness before God.

The Gospel and Human wisdom

This sermon was preached on July 14, 2013

The Bible does not turn away from this reality: that the gospel may not make sense to everyone.
But neither does it turn away from another truth...

Intro. To Corinthians

"All of this evidence together suggests that Paul's Corinth was at once the New York, Los Angeles, and Las Vegas of the ancient world."

The Gospel as a contradiction to human wisdom (1:18-25)
He pointed out that the gospel is not a form of Sophia (human wisdom).
Its message of a crucified Messiah does not appeal to human wisdom

18 The message of the cross is foolish to those who are headed for destruction!
But we who are being saved know it is the very power of God.

Caleb: A Man Who Rose Above His Limitations

June 30,2013

Joshua 14:6-15  New Living Translation (NLT)

6 A delegation from the tribe of Judah, led by Caleb…, came to Joshua at Gilgal. Caleb said to Joshua, “Remember what the Lord said to Moses, the man of God, about you and me when we were at Kadesh-barnea.

7 I was forty years old when Moses, the servant of the Lord, sent me from Kadesh-barnea to explore the land of Canaan. I returned and gave an honest report,

8 but my brothers who went with me frightened the people from entering the Promised Land. For my part, I wholeheartedly followed the Lord my God.

9 So that day Moses solemnly promised me, ‘The land of Canaan on which you were just walking will be your grant of land and that of your descendants forever, because you wholeheartedly followed the Lord my God.’

10 “Now, as you can see, the Lord has kept me alive and well as he promised for all these forty-five years since Moses made this promise—even while Israel wandered in the wilderness. Today I am eighty-five years old.

11 I am as strong now as I was when Moses sent me on that journey, and I can still travel and fight as well as I could then.

12 So give me the hill country that the Lord promised me. You will remember that as scouts we found the descendants of Anak living there in great, walled towns. But if the Lord is with me, I will drive them out of the land, just as the Lord said.”

13 So Joshua blessed Caleb son of Jephunneh and gave Hebron to him as his portion of land.

14 Hebron still belongs to the descendants of Caleb son of Jephunneh the Kenizzite because he wholeheartedly followed the Lord, the God of Israel.

15 (Previously Hebron had been called Kiriath-arba. It had been named after Arba, a great hero of the descendants of Anak.)

Freedom IN CHRIST. BONDAGE in Religion.

June 23, 2013

Luke 11:37-54

At the time that Christ came into the World, men had such a distorted view of God, His Character & His Heart! Much of that wrong perception was a part of the Religious establishment. How about today?

FREEDOM starts with inward cleansing.

v.37-41  Jesus responds -  You are EATING W/ AN UNCLEAN HEART!
They are so concerned about the external actions but neglect the internal state of their heart
"The way to clean up a dirty vocabulary is not to brush your teeth but to cleanse your heart."

Application:  Are we  HAVING IT TOGETHER ON THE OUTSIDE / but are Nowhere on the inside .
Are we merely going through the motions spiritually so that our worship is in vain – because our hearts are really far from the Lord.

JESUS’ 6 WOES . A cry for God's just judgment in light of an action = WATCH OUT – Grief WILL COME UPON YOU

v.42 1ST WOE- Majoring on the minors .   Freedom results in right  priorities

Rom. 1:16-32 A GOSPEL WORTH SHARING

June 2 Sermon

The Good news & the bad news. The good news-The Gospel. The bad news- the need for  the Gospel (sinful condition of man)

Paul's statements about the Gospel begin in a strange fashion.
He tells us that he is not "ashamed of the Gospel."
Understanding of that culture will help us why.   (4 reasons)

1. Because of the moral condition of that day.
Nero was the Emperor of Rome.  He was a wicked, degenerate man.  Like leader like follower.
The Gospel was opposed to a lot of things Rome was.

2. Because Paul was a Jew. considered by many to be a sub-human race.
They were fit for nothing but to be despised, mistreated, and enslaved.

3. Because the Gospel Paul was preaching was almost unbelievable.
Savior - part of the despised Jewish race, He was said to be the Savior of man,
Claimed to be the Son of God, even God Himself, yet He claimed to be a man.
He died on a Roman cross, a symbol of shame, but in dying this death, He was said to have died for all men.
To have risen from the dead the third day after His death-  just too bizarre to believe.

4. Because everywhere Paul went preaching the cross, he was ridiculed, cast out, imprisoned, or treated cruelly.

What can make us ashamed of the Gospel nowadays?

Paul would want to be clear about his commitment to the Gospel message.
a man who believed his message and was willing to pay the price to share it.

Ashamed, why wasn't Paul?  keep on going for God?
invigorated  driving him around the world preaching the same hated message?

The answer to those questions is found in the truths that Paul reveals to us about the Gospel.
Paul reminds us that we have A Gospel Worth Sharing.
 Let's  see why.

Luke 11 Outline on Prayer

May 19 Sermon

Luke 11:1-13      Prayer is a discipline of dependence on God
and as such is the life breath of every follower of Jesus.

11 “Lord, teach us to pray….
This is the only time that someone asked Jesus to teach them something, another indication of the importance of this instruction.

2 Jesus said, “This is how you should pray:
Jesus intended the disciples to repeat it verbatim.

“Father,
-combines respect for the father's authority with a sense of intimacy.
"The use of the intimate form was the amazing new thing that Jesus wished to teach his disciples, initiating them into the same close relationship with the father that he enjoyed. . ."

Ruth 1 PURPOSE: " a gratifying reminder that even in the darkest times God is at work in the hearts of His faithful remnant."

TRAGEDY
A.  1 In the days when the judges ruled in Israel,
The opening verse of the book reminds us of the leadership vacuum in Israel during the Judges Period.
The closing verse reveals God's provision of the greatest leader that Israel had since that time.
Therefore the book seems concerned with showing how God provided for His people, especially for their leadership need.

The Foundation of the Church

The Foundation of the Church (FCC)/       Your life’s foundation

Acts 1:1-11  (New Living Translation)

Jesus’ Life & Teachings/                                                      Jesus is my Teacher
1 In my first book I told you,
Theophilus, about everything Jesus began to do and teach
2 until the day he was taken up to heaven after giving his chosen apostles further instructions through the Holy Spirit.

Resurrection/                                                          Jesus is my resurrection
3 During the forty days after his crucifixion, he appeared to the apostles from time to time, and he proved to them in many ways that he was actually alive. And he talked to them about the Kingdom of God.

The Holy Spirit/                                                      I have the Holy Spirit
4 Once when he was eating with them, he commanded them, “Do not leave Jerusalem until the Father sends you the gift he promised, as I told you before.
5 John baptized with water, but in just a few days you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit.”

The Kingdom of God                          I live in another Kingdom
6 So when the apostles were with Jesus, they kept asking him, “Lord, has the time come for you to free Israel and restore our kingdom?”
7 He replied, “The Father alone has the authority to set those dates and times, and they are not for you to know.

Power & Mission                                 I have God’s power to fulfill my mission
8 But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon you. And you will be my witnesses, telling people about me everywhere—in Jerusalem, throughout Judea, in Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.”

The coming King                                                     My King is coming again
9 After saying this, he was taken up into a cloud while they were watching, and they could no longer see him. 10 As they strained to see him rising into heaven, two white-robed men suddenly stood among them. 11 “Men of Galilee,” they said, “why are you standing here staring into heaven? Jesus has been taken from you into heaven, but someday he will return from heaven in the same way you saw him go!”

What should I do to inherit eternal life?

Luke 10

INTRO:
The parable of the Good Samaritan is a very well known story & Some literary critics consider it the greatest story ever told.

The parable of the Good Samaritan came about as an answer to a question that was asked by a Lawyer.
Jewish scribes would have great interest in such questions, not only for personal reasons but because they were interested in interpreting the law for the community.

25 One day an expert in religious law stood up to test Jesus by asking him this question: “Teacher, what should I do to inherit eternal life?”

David : After God’s own heart

INTRODUCTION: What is the greatest compliment for you???
What is the greatest compliment that you have received?

1.We all like compliments. Mark Twain  said that he could live for a whole month on a good compliment.
As a Christian I can think of no higher compliment than to be described
as a man or woman with a heart after God’s heart.
When that compliment comes from God Himself, we had better sit up and take notice!
Here is a person whose life we can all profit by studying. Such was God’s description of David:
“This is a man after My own heart” (Acts 13:22 ; 1 Sam. 13:14).

2.I would like us to spend time seeking to understand how this humble shepherd boy became a man after God’s Own heart.
David achieved in his life something that God wants each of His children to achieve.   David became a man after God’s Own heart and a study of his life can teach us how to do that too.

3.Now, David was not perfect. In fact, he was far from it!  He failed, and he failed big, but he kept short accounts with God.  He sinned, but he was quick to confess and he manifested genuine heart repentance.
David has much that he can teach us about ….Ex. obedience, faith, worship etc..

Sermon: The Supreme Question of Easter (John 11:25-26): Pastor Tito Dizon

Easter             The Supreme Question of Easter – John 11:25-26

March 13,2013  Sacramento Bee Article pp.1 &20: $5 Million Study looks at the chances of eternal life.

During  Easter season, major news magazines have run cover stories on religious themes.

Time magazine did one entitled “Does Heaven Exist?”
U.S. News and World Report. Titled “Life After Death,” the article reported on the scientific debate about near-death experiences. Listen to the first paragraph:

Ex. After being struck by lightning, a man meets a “Being of Light” who grants forgiveness for a lifetimes of violence. In full cardiac arrest on the operating table, a gradeschool teacher travels down a long tunnel to “a place filled up with love, and a beautiful white light.” And Elvis Presley takes her by the hand. (U.S. News and World Report, March 31, 1997, p. 59)

The article goes on to say that perhaps as many as 15 million Americans have had near-death experiences. Many of them were changed forever by the things they experienced. They had touched eternity, or so they believed, and life on this earth could never be the same again.

We all wonder about life after death, don’t we?  It’s natural to think about it because sooner or later we’re going to die. That much is certain.

“Have you smelled the first shovel of dirt from your grave yet?”

I. Death: The Last Enemy
Death is truly the last enemy of the people of God. That’s not my word.  It’s what the Bible says in 1 Corinthians 15:26. We can beat many other enemies- temptations, trials; but death always wins in the end.  We cannot put it off, delay it, or deny it. “It is appointed unto man once to die,” says the Bible, and no one will escape that appointment.

II. Jesus and Death
By  the time Jesus got to Lazarus, had been in the tomb for four days.

17 When Jesus arrived at Bethany, he was told that Lazarus had already been in his grave for four days. 18 Bethany was only a few miles down the road from Jerusalem,
19 and many of the people had come to console Martha and Mary in their loss.
20 When Martha got word that Jesus was coming, she went to meet him. But Mary stayed in the house. 21 Martha said to Jesus, “Lord, if only you had been here, my brother would not have died.
22 But even now I know that God will give you whatever you ask.”
23 Jesus told her, “Your brother will rise again.”
24 “Yes,” Martha said, “he will rise when everyone else rises, at the last day.”

When Martha saw him, she said, “Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died” (11:21). There is a strange combination of sorrow and enormous faith in those words.

Lazarus has been dead so long that any thought of an immediate resurrection is out of the question.
But that doesn’t seem to be on Martha’s mind. She thought that Jesus could heal Lazarus and she also believed he would be raised on the last day. It apparently never occurred to her that Jesus could raise Lazarus right then and there.

It is against this backdrop that Jesus said to Martha those famous words that have been quoted at a million gravesides ever since:

“I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in me will live, even though he dies;
and whoever lives and believes in me will never die. Do you believe this?” (11:25-26 NIV)

These words have been a light and a hope to the people of God for 2000 years. We quote them because they express our deepest faith in Jesus Christ. I’ve always thought these verses were a bit mysterious because Jesus seems to contradict himself.  In one place he says a man will live even if he dies.
Then he immediately says that if a man believes in him he will never die.  How is it that you can die and not die at the same time?

Let us consider each phrase carefully in order to understand what Jesus is saying to us on Easter Sunday.

1. He is the master of death in all its forms.
“I am the resurrection and the life.”
He doesn’t say, “I bring resurrection and life” but rather “I am the resurrection and the life.” In the presence of Jesus death is no longer death.

How can that be?  Our Lord often used the word “sleep” to describe death. Death for the believer is like lying down to a good long nap. The body may sleep a long time—for many years in fact—but in the end it will wake up. When Jesus raised Lazarus, it was just a specimen, a sample of what he will do for his people when he returns to the earth.

The answer to death is not a resurrection.  It’s Jesus himself. “I am the resurrection and the life.”
No one can ever hope to escape death unless he is related to Jesus through personal faith.

That’s why this article in U.S. News and World Report is so telling. Men and women desperately want to peer beyond the veil. They want to know what lies on the other side of death. The answer is quite simple. If you know Jesus, what lies on the other side is resurrection and life. If you don’t know him, you have no hope at all.

You might call the Psychic Hotline or talk to the woman who thinks she met Elvis. When the time of death comes, you’d better know Jesus or you’re going to be all alone. In march 1997) most of us were shocked and saddened by the mass suicide of 39 men and women who were part of the “Heaven’s Gate” cult in California. Evidently they mixed a few Bible verses with some bizarre science fiction and threw in some New Age mysticism to create a heady brew that led them to believe that a UFO was approaching the earth. They thought that by taking their own lives they would be transported to new existence aboard the UFO. Why would people do something like this?

I submit that their belief in life after death was entirely proper. However, when people cut themselves off from the Word of God, they have nothing left but vain speculations and idle dreams. What they did was extreme, but it illustrates the folly of trying to find answers apart from God’s revelation.

2. He is the answer to death for all of us.
“He who believes in me will live, even though he dies.” Think about those words for a moment.
You can live even though you die. This is the fondest and deepest wish inside the human heart.
To know that death is not the end.

How sad it must be to come to the end of life and to believe that after death this is nothing at all.
Just a vanishing into the cosmos, a passing into the dark night, marching off the stage into eternal nothingness.

But without Jesus Christ, what other hope do we have? You & I have been funerals for all kinds of people. Most of them have been older, but occasionally  a funeral for a younger person, and sometimes  a child or an infant. The circumstances vary , but this much is certain. At the moment of death the truth about individuals comes out.

You can fake your religion most days, but you can’t fake it when you stare death cold in the face.
In that moment Jesus makes all the difference in the world. In the saddest moments I have seen the light of God on the faces of those who have lost their loved ones. Through their tears they smile because they know Jesus and he has made all the difference.

3. He is the victor over death for all time.
“And whoever lives and believes in me will never die.”

This is the most amazing statement Jesus ever made because he is clearly saying that death for the believer ceases to be death at all.  It is merely the continuation of life in the presence of God.
That’s what Paul meant when he said that to die “is gain.” It’s also what David meant when he declared “And I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever.”  Jesus had this in mind when he promised the dying thief, “Today you will be with me in paradise.”

Can you imagine what it was like for Jesus to raise Lazarus from the dead? First he told them to roll away the stone.
38 Jesus was still angry as he arrived at the tomb, a cave with a stone rolled across its entrance.
Martha objected, pointing out that his body would stink because it had been dead for four days.
39 “Roll the stone aside,” Jesus told them. But Martha, the dead man’s sister, protested,
“Lord, he has been dead for four days. The smell will be terrible.” 40 Jesus responded, “Didn’t I tell you that you would see God’s glory if you believe?”
41 So they rolled the stone aside. Then Jesus looked up to heaven and said, “Father, thank you for hearing me.
Then Jesus prayed to his Father.
42 You always hear me, but I said it out loud for the sake of all these people standing here, so that they will believe you sent me.” Then he cried out, “Lazarus, come forth!” Why did he call his name? Because if he hadn’t said, “Lazarus,” all the dead in all the graves of the world would have been suddenly emptied.
43 Then Jesus shouted, “Lazarus, come out!”
The Bible says that Lazarus came forth from the grave, still bound in his graveclothes. Jesus ordered that the wrappings be removed and he be set free.
44 And the dead man came out, his hands and feet bound in graveclothes, his face wrapped in a headcloth. Jesus told them, “Unwrap him and let him go!”

Here’s something you may not have considered.  Lazarus was raised from the dead only to die again later. Why did Jesus raise him? So that we would know that he could do it. After all, anyone could say “I am the resurrection and the life,” but only the Son of God could do what Jesus did.

III. The Question You Must Answer
It’s Easter Sunday morning, 2013. What does this day mean?  It means that through Jesus Christ you may be released from the fear of death. But there’s a question you must answer. It’s the question found at the end of verse 26. We generally overlook the question, but it’s the key to what Jesus said.

Here’s the question. “Do you believe this?” That’s the supreme question of Easter. In the end truth must always become personal.

Let me wrap up this message by asking you six all-important questions:
  1. Do you believe with all your heart that Jesus Christ is the Son of God who came from heaven to live on this earth 2000 years ago?
  2. Do you believe that when he died on the Cross, he died in your place, bearing your punishment, and paying for your sins?
  3. Do you believe than on Easter Sunday morning, he literally, physically, bodily rose from the dead never to die again?
  4. Do you believe that Jesus is now seated at the right hand of God the Father?
  5. Do you believe that Jesus is truly the resurrection and the life and that he is able to remove the terror of death for those who trust him?
  6. Are you willing to stake your life on your answers to the first five questions?

I began the message by quoting from the magazine article that asks the question “Is there life after death?”. In some ways, you can’t blame the people of the world for looking to Near-Death Experiences to answer that question.  If you don’t know Jesus, you’ll grasp at any straw. But if you know him, you don’t need to worry about those things.

We don’t need the word of people who nearly died when we have the word of someone who died on Friday and then came back to life on Sunday morning. His Word can be trusted and he said, “I am the resurrection and the life.”

Do you know him? I pray you will open the door and let him in. You will never regret that decision and when death finally comes, it won’t be death at all, but an entrance into life everlasting.

Sermon: Heaven's Coronation Day (1 Corinthians 3:10-15): Pastor Tito Dizon

[This sermon was first preached on March 17, 2013 at Folsom Community Church by Pastor Tito Dizon]

1 Corinthians 3:10-15     HEAVEN'S CORONATION DAY
Intro: Today, I would like for us to take some time to look into the event known in the Bible as the Judgment Seat of Christ. This is an event that is spoken of in several passages of Scripture.

2 Corinthians 5:10 For we must all stand before Christ to be judged. We will each receive whatever we deserve for the good or evil we have done in this earthly body) .
This passage  speak of the same event. They refer to a time when every child of God will stand before the Lord Jesus Christ and give an account of their service to the Lord.

I don't mind telling you that when I think of that event, I do so with a bit of dread. However, I also want you to know that there will be far more for us to look forward to than there will be for us to fear!

For it is on that day that the fruits of the journey are rewarded. It is that day when we may hear the Lord Jesus say, "Well done thou good and faithful servant."

Heaven's Coronation Day.

I want you to be ready when that day arrives.
This passage reveal three aspects of that great day that we need to notice today

It will be:
I. V. 10-13 A DAY OF INTIMATE DISCOVERIES
II. V. 14 A DAY OF INTENSE DELIGHTS
III. V. 15 A DAY OF IMMENSE DISAPPOINTMENTS

I. V. 10-13 A DAY OF INTIMATE DISCOVERIES
Paul describes the Christian life as a building. He tells us that he laid the foundation, but it is our responsibility and duty to build on that foundation. It is our duty to build correctly!

10 Because of God’s grace to me, I have laid the foundation like an expert builder. Now others are building on it. But whoever is building on this foundation must be very careful.
11 For no one can lay any foundation other than the one we already have—Jesus Christ.
Foundation: The whole idea of this word is this: When the Lord saved your soul, He placed you on the foundation of the Lord Jesus Christ.  verse 11 makes it clear that this is an event that is for believers only!

In other words, if you aren't building from your faith in the Lord Jesus Christ, then you will not be at the Judgment Seat of Christ, but you will either be in the Tribulation or you will already be in Hell!

others are building on it. But whoever is building on : We (Pastor, BS Teacher, C’tian friend, Parents,(you )are building on it.must be very careful
  A. V. 10 Our Methods Will Be Discovered - Paul tells us that "how" we built on the foundation will pass under the microscope of God in that Day. Since the very moment you were saved, you have been building a life. This life can either be a thing of glory to the Lord, or it can be a thing of disgrace before the Lord. When we stand before the Judgment Seat of Christ, we will answer for how we have built our lives.

12 Anyone who builds on that foundation may use a variety of materials—gold, silver, jewels, wood, hay, or straw.
    B. V. 12 Our Materials Will Be Discovered - This verse tells us that there are two possible categories of materials from which we can construct our spiritual house.

        1. There Are Worthy Materials - Gold, Silver and Precious Stones. These refer to things that are precious, valuable, beautiful and hard to come by.These are also things that survive and even thrive in the fire. These picture the kind of works that the Lord will bless in that day, and the kind of works that every believer should have in his/her life as they journey through this world.
        2. There Are Worthless Materials - Wood, Hay and Stubble. These refer to those things that are temporary, ugly, cheap and easy to come by. They would speak of things that are done out of the will of God, or things that are done out of a mean spirit, or things that are done out of selfishness, etc. They differ from the other materials in that each of these is immediately destroyed by flames. These refer to the kinds of motives, decisions & activities that we should avoid as believers.

13 But on the judgment day, fire will reveal what kind of work each builder has done. The fire will show if a person’s work has any value.
In Paul's day, in every city there was a place called the Bema, or judgment seat. It was from this raised platform, usually in the center of town, that announcements were made, judgments rendered and commendations handed out.

It was at the Bema Seat that rewards were given out to the winners of the Greek games. It was here that their crowns were given to them. All public proclamations came from this Bema seat. So, we mustn't think that it was only a place for fear and trembling. Certainly some were rebuked when they came here, but many others were rewarded and blessed.

Christ's seat of judgment is no different!

There are two issues that will not be addressed at the Judgment Seat of Christ. Those issues are:
  1. Salvation - That was forever taken care of at the moment of conversion. Nothing can ever change the state of the believer's soul. If a person is saved, they are saved forever! Ill. No lost person will appear at the Judgment Seat of Christ. There will be another Judgment that take care of the lost sinner. If you are here, you are saved!!!
  2. Sin - Sin was taken care of forever at Calvary when the Lord Jesus died, John 19:30! When Jesus died, He died for the ALL sin of the world - 2 Cor. 5:21. Now, when a sinner places his faith in the Lord Jesus for salvation, all his sins are forever taken care of! They will not be mentioned when we arrive here! Hallelujah, that is enough to shout about!!!

This judgment will not determine whether or not you get into Heaven. That was decided when you received Jesus as your Savior. This judgment will not take into account your sins. They were paid for at the cross. When we sin in this world, we reap the consequences of those sins, but the sins themselves were completely paid for by the Lord Jesus at Calvary!!!

What will be dealt with is the manner in which we have lived this earthly life, from the moment of our conversion until the day we died, or were raptured. It will be about how we used the responsibilities, privileges and opportunities we were given by the Lord Jesus as we journeyed through this world. Perhaps it would help us to remember that every born again believer is a "steward". That is, we are the servants of God. He has placed in our hands His ministry to the world.

To accomplish this ministry, the Lord has given each of us certain things.
  1. He has given us 24 hours in every day.  Eph. 5:16; 15 So be careful how you live. Don’t live like fools, but like those who are wise. 16 Make the most of every opportunity in these evil days. 17 Don’t act thoughtlessly, but understand what the Lord wants you to do.
  2. He has given us money. 2 Cor. 9:6-7 6 Remember this—a farmer who plants only a few seeds will get a small crop. But the one who plants generously will get a generous crop. 7 You must each decide in your heart how much to give. And don’t give reluctantly or in response to pressure. “For God loves a person who gives cheerfully.” …9 As the Scriptures say,“They share freely and give generously to the poor. Their good deeds will be remembered forever.”
  3. He has blessed us with gifts and abilities to use for His glory.  1 Cor. 12:7 A spiritual gift is given to each of us so we can help each other.
  4. He has given us opportunities for service and for ministry. Our Master, the Lord Jesus, has entrusted us with His business and He will require that each of His stewards give an account of their service unto Him when He returns.

The Bible tells us that we are the "stewards" of God as stewards, we are to be found faithful .We will answer for the lives we are living in this world.

    V. 13 Our Ministry Will Be Discovered - Verse 13 lets us know that all of our works will be put to the fire. Somehow, the Lord will apply the fire of His judgment to the things we did in this life and they will be made "manifest". This word means that they will be "Made known publically."

As we travel toward Heaven, there are those among us who have all the appearance of having plenty of good works in their life. However, behind the things they do is a self-serving motive. Their works will burn. There are others who do things and others see them and say they do them to be seen. However, behind their works it love for the Lord. They do what they do to glorify God. Their works will abide! What I am trying to say is that you cannot look around you this morning and tell much about a person's works by what you see. However, on that day, there will be no hiding from the truth! Every motive, every work, every secret thought, every self-serving motive will be revealed for all to see! The fire of Christ's judgment will make the truth known!

I am sure that there are sermons which I have preached that will burn up when I stand before the Lord. Maybe I preached them to "tickle" someone's ears. Maybe I preached them to make folks thing highly of me. I am sure that many of the things I have done in the name of the Lord will burn up before my eyes on that day. I cannot change the yesterdays of my life, but I can do something about the tomorrow's, and so can you!

What is the bottom line? Our cats/works  will all be out of the bag when we stand before Jesus and face Him in Judgment!)

Just how does one determine the difference between works that will burn and works that will endure the flames of judgment? That may be easier to answer by telling you of some areas that are sure to be judged by the Lord.

The greatest Commandment
Luke 10: 27 The man answered, “‘You must love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your soul, all your strength, and all your mind.’ And, ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’”

How Faithful We Are To The Word Of God - 2 Tim. 3: 16 All Scripture is inspired by God and is useful to teach us what is true and to make us realize what is wrong in our lives. It corrects us when we are wrong and teaches us to do what is right. 17 God uses it to prepare and equip his people to do every good work.

How We Treat Others - Matt. 10:42 And if you give even a cup of cold water to one of the least of my followers, you will surely be rewarded.”

14 If the work survives, that builder will receive a reward.

II. V. 14 A DAY OF INTENSE DELIGHTS
For many, the Judgment Seat of Christ will be the moment when all their trials are made worthwhile. It will literally be their crowning moment!)

    A. A Potential Is Mentioned - The first part of this verse tells us that there is the potential that some part of our works will remain after they have been put to the fire. Wouldn't it be a glorious thing to see some of what you did for Jesus actually remain? Many will! What happens to your works all depends on you!

    B. A Promise Is Mentioned - Those things that remain will be the basis for rewards. The Lord Jesus will honor us by giving us rewards for the things we do for Him. That is almost beyond belief, but the Bible tells us five crowns that are available as rewards to the faithful saint of God. Those crowns are:

  1. The Incorruptible Crown - Awarded for faithfulness to the Lord - 1 Cor. 9:25  All athletes are disciplined in their training. They do it to win a prize that will fade away, but we do it for an eternal prize.       Heb. 12:1 Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a huge crowd of witnesses to the life of faith, let us strip off every weight that slows us down, especially the sin that so easily trips us up. And let us run with endurance the race God has set before us.;
  2. The Crown Of Life - For the person who endures and overcomes temptation - James 1:12 God blesses those who patiently endure testing and temptation. Afterward they will receive the crown of life that God has promised to those who love him.
  3. The Crown Of Rejoicing - This is the soul winners crown - 1 Thes. 2:19-20 After all, what gives us hope and joy, and what will be our proud reward and crown as we stand before our Lord Jesus when he returns? It is you! 20 Yes, you are our pride and joy. How Many Souls We Witness To And Win To Jesus ?  Dan. 12:3; 3 Those who are wise will shine as bright as the sky, and those who lead many to righteousness will shine like the stars forever.
  4. The Crown Of Righteousness - This will be given to those who anticipate and live in the light of the return of Jesus - 2 Tim. 4:8 And now the prize awaits me—the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will give me on the day of his return. And the prize is not just for me but for all who eagerly look forward to his appearing.
  5. The Crown Of Glory -This will be given to the faithful ministers who give themselves to lead and feed the flock of God - How Faithful We Are To The Flock Of God? 1 Pet. 5:2-4 2 Care for the flock that God has entrusted to you. Watch over it willingly, not grudgingly—not for what you will get out of it, but because you are eager to serve God. 3 Don’t lord it over the people assigned to your care, but lead them by your own good example. 4 And when the Great Shepherd appears, you will receive a crown of never-ending glory and honor.
  6. We need to understand that every deed done in the name of Jesus will be blessed and rewarded over there. Men may not see the value of your service, but rest assured that Jesus takes perfect note and that He will reward you fairly for your sacrifice for Him. Matt. 25:34-40)

34 “Then the King will say to those on his right, ‘Come, you who are blessed by my Father, inherit the Kingdom prepared for you from the creation of the world. 35 For I was hungry, and you fed me. I was thirsty, and you gave me a drink. I was a stranger, and you invited me into your home. 36 I was naked, and you gave me clothing. I was sick, and you cared for me. I was in prison, and you visited me.’
37 “Then these righteous ones will reply, ‘Lord, when did we ever see you hungry and feed you? Or thirsty and give you something to drink?
38 Or a stranger and show you hospitality? Or naked and give you clothing?
39 When did we ever see you sick or in prison and visit you?’
40 “And the King will say, ‘I tell you the truth, when you did it to one of the least of these my brothers and sisters, you were doing it to me!’

Why is He going to give us crowns? The answer is found in Revelation 4:9-11.
9 Whenever the living beings give glory and honor and thanks to the one sitting on the throne (the one who lives forever and ever),
10 the twenty-four elders fall down and worship the one sitting on the throne (the one who lives forever and ever). And they lay their crowns before the throne and say,
11 “You are worthy, O Lord our God,    to receive glory and honor and power.
For you created all things,  and they exist because you created what you pleased.”

We will cast those crowns at His feet to honor Him!)

15 But if the work is burned up, the builder will suffer great loss.
The builder will be saved, but like someone barely escaping through a wall of flames.

III. V. 15 A DAY OF IMMENSE DISAPPOINTMENTS
    A. The Pain That Is Mentioned - While some of our works will remain, others will be destroyed before our eyes. This will surely be a painful time for every believer. There will be many tears shed right here!

    B. The Price That Is Mentioned - "he shall suffer loss". This means that the believer will lose the reward he could have earned had his life been what it should be. Some would teach us that even earned rewards will be lost to. However, considering that God is Just, this probably refers to what the believer "could" have earned. Many of us will see rewards earned by others that could have been ours as well, if we had only been faithful too.

(I don't know about you, but I want to be as faithful as possible so that I might win every reward that I can. The reason is not so I can parade around Heaven with my crowns and trophies and show off. The reason is that I may have more to give back to Jesus, thus enhancing His glory! That is what this thing is all about! The Master rewards the servants and the servants in turn use those things to glorify Him! That is what this whole thing boils down to! If I will live my life to glorify the Lord God here; then I will have crowns to lay at His feet there, adding even more glory to the Lord, Rev. 4.)

    C. The Promise That Is Mentioned - Notice again that the believer who may see his works burn will still be saved. I cannot stress it enough that the issue here will not be about salvation! This was settled when you received Jesus. Now, some might take this and say, "Well, I'm saved! I can do as I please and live any way I want to and it doesn't matter." If you are really saved, you won't think like that! If you are really saved, there will be a part of you that will long to please the Lord. If you are saved, you will prove it by living for the Lord, at least some of the time!

( I thank God that I am saved forever. I thank Him that nothing can ever change that! However, I want to have something to show for my life when I arrive there. I do not want to see everything burn up. I want some crowns to lay at Jesus' feet. How about you?)

Application”:  Well, if these verses have taught us anything, they have taught us that there are two ways to ruin a good building: A faulty foundation and faulty materials.

Of the utmost of importance today is for every person in this room to determine what foundation they are building on. Only those houses built on the Lord Jesus Christ, His death and His resurrection will stand, Matt. 7:24-27. All other will perish in the waves of God's great wrath. Are you saved? Be sure before you leave this building today!

If you are on the right foundation, what kind of materials are you building with? Are you using gold, silver and precious stones? That is, are you building a life to the glory of God? Are you building with good actions and attitudes? If so, then won't it be a blessing to see those things stand the test and bring honor to the Lord? Maybe you are using wood, hay and stubble. If so, you know that your works are going to burn up before your eyes. You will miss out on some of the glorious things God has for those who are faithful stewards. Wouldn't you like to scrap that shabby house this morning, tear it down in this altar and with God's begin to build a house that will honor Jesus both here and in the hereafter?

The choice is yours, but the reality remains: Heaven's Coronation Day is coming. How it turns out is all up to you. Works: Purified or Fried?

We need to reminded  that we are one day closer to eternity than we were yesterday! We need to prepare to meet God!
