Sermon: Desperate Measures (Luke 7:11-17): Tim Lewis

This sermon was preached at Folsom Community Church on 1/29/12 by Tim Lewis.
Desperate Measures
Luke 7:11-17

Introduction

[Article: Brothers’ Bond Was Tight-In Life, Death, Sacramento Bee, January 28, 2012, A1]
[My first funeral in the Philippines at age 19. What a contrast with my limited experience with funerals growing up, but much closer to what we see in the Bible.]
One of the most useful ways I have found to understand the life of Jesus is to place myself in the shoes of the people who he met, and imagine what it must have been like. I wonder, “What must it have been like? What was I before I met Jesus? What was I after I met Jesus?”
  1. Our Situation: Desperation
  2. Jesus’ Reaction: Compassion
  3. Our Response: Amazement

Our Situation: Desperation (vs. 11-12)

Soon afterward, Jesus went to a town called Nain, and his disciples and a large crowd went along with him. As he approached the town gate, a dead person was being carried out—the only son of his mother, and she was a widow. And a large crowd from the town was with her.  – Luke 7:11-12
In Chapter 7 of the book of Luke, Jesus is traveling from town to town around the portion of northern Israel called Galilee. He has just left Capernaum, one of the bigger cities and now, a few miles from Jesus’ home town of Nazareth, he arrived at the town of Nain. Nain was really not much more than a dot on the map and while the Bible says there was a “town gate” the town was so small that they wrote “Hello” and “Goodbye” on the same sign (just kidding).
The Bible says that Jesus was travelling with two groups: his “disciples” and a “large crowd”. Even this early in his ministry, he was the rabbi or teacher and he had full time students (or disciples). In the closest group of disciples, sort of his inner circle, were “The Rock” Peter and “The Thunder Brothers” James and John. The next nine rounded out his posse. They called themselves “The Twelve” and included the ex-tax collector Matthew, the other type of thief Judas, the twin Thomas and a member of a violent para-military group, Simon. Around these, there were perhaps as many as seventy others who joined Jesus at various points in his travels, including Mary, Mary, and Mary (they didn’t have a lot of creativity in naming girls back then).
Jesus attracted a lot of attention. Everywhere he went, large groups of people tried to get a glimpse of what he was doing, because he had a reputation for miracles (like the healing of a sick servant earlier in this same chapter) and a reputation for smart, authoritative and even radical teaching (like his sermon in chapter 6). He healed and he taught and more and more people kept coming to see this miracle man. Sometimes they even forgot to eat. Sometimes they wanted to make him king. Sometimes they ripped open the roof to get a look at him. Wherever, however, they came to see Jesus.
And this loud, noisy, happy crowd arrives in Nain just in time to confront another large crowd—but this crowd is full of wailing and sadness. Carried upon the shoulders of friends, a plank of wood, a dead young man being carried to a tomb. Young, obviously popular, loved, needed. As a widow, his mother now had no one to support her. The death of her son was the death of hope. It was like a curse. Bad luck. In another place in the Bible, Naomi, who also lost both husband and son, said: “The Almighty has made my life very bitter. I went away full, but the LORD has brought me back empty.” (Ruth 1:20b-21a)
Sometimes life is like that.

Jesus’ Reaction: Compassion (vs. 13-15)

When the Lord saw her, his heart went out to her and he said, “Don’t cry.” Then he went up and touched the coffin, and those carrying it stood still. He said, “Young man, I say to you, get up!”  The dead man sat up and began to talk, and Jesus gave him back to his mother.  – Luke 7:13-15
Verse 13 says, “when the Lord saw her” The two crowds collide, the happy and the sad, the hopeful with the disappointed, the widow and the Messiah, the kingdom of God and the terrible kingdom of death and despair. And suddenly Jesus and the widow are face-to-face.
Do we see those who are hurting? Or do we rush by them, afraid that they will spoil our good mood? [Veteran by the road in Beaverton] Sometimes we harden our heart; maybe we feel drained; maybe we console ourselves with “someone else will take care of it”; maybe [fill in the blank with your excuse] and we push down on the gas pedal so we don’t have to look them in the eye.
But Jesus saw her and, in that instance, he took in her situation and “his heart went out to her” Another translation says he was “moved with compassion” God is not dispassionate. He is not aloof. His heart is also moved by the pain and suffering and trouble and conflict in our lives. God’s heart is moved, because this is not the way it is supposed to be.
God’s compassion for our broken situation always moves him to action. He saw, he was moved, he spoke and he moved. Jesus’ compassion always moves (not just moved!) him to action that transforms. Look at what the Bible says:
And we know that God causes everything to work together for the good of those who love God and are called according to his purpose for them. – Romans 8:28 (NLT)
My failures. My pain. My addictions. My relationships. My mistakes. All of them will, somehow, be transformed by God into the good. Let me state this another way: If you love God and trust him, nothing can keep you from the good. [Illustration: The Simarilion, creation & music; Illustration: virus code]  Why does God transform the terrible things that happen to us into something good? For the same reason he reached out to a widow and her son—because of his great compassion—his great love--for us. We are his children….
How does God do it? How does his compassion transform evil circumstances into good outcomes? I don’t know. He is God and has more resources and ingenuity and insight than I can even begin to comprehend. But here are four patterns that I have found in Scripture. There may be more, but here are four.
  1. God transforms how we respond. One of the ways that God’s compassion transforms the bad into good is by changing you.  Remember when we talked about the fruit of the spirit? Love, joy, peace, patience? What if God changed you so that, when people in your life were unlovable, you were able to respond with love? Or if the situation was depressing, you could respond with joy. Or when the world is going crazy, peace. Or when frustrating, patience. So God changes the situation by changing you-making you stronger.
  2. God works with us to transform your world. Another way that God’s compassion transforms the bad is by using you to change it.  “Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.” (Romans 12:21)
  3. God takes you. “David served God’s purpose in his own generation, then he died and was buried with his ancestors.;…” – Acts 13:36 (CEB)
  4. God takes away the evil. Just like Jesus did for this widow. He stretched out his hand, and touched the bier where the dead body was being carried. The men carrying it stopped. And her son sat up and started talking. And Jesus gave the mother back her son.

Our Reaction: Amazement (vs. 16-17)

They were all filled with awe and praised God. “A great prophet has appeared among us,” they said. “God has come to help his people.”  This news about Jesus spread throughout Judea and the surrounding country. – Luke 7:16-17
  1. God did something only God could do. Literally they were overcome by fear, but it wasn’t the type of fear that cripples you, it was the kind of fear that comes from realizing that you are were there on holy ground when God stepped in and did a God thing. They recognized that. When God acts in a way that you didn’t, you didn’t cause and you didn’t deserve--when you see that triple-play combo-- you are on holy ground, in the presence of a living and active God.
  2. God doubled the number of happy people.  There was one happy crowd and one sad crowd before. Now there is one bigger happy crowd. When you recognize that God has been active with you, don’t try to explain it away. Don’t let it slip by. Celebrate it. Some miracles take only a moment, but other miracles are years in the making.  You want to dance, you want to shout, you want to clap, you want to sing, then you are in good company with these people of Nain, who have watched their tears turned to joy.
  3. God got the credit. It went to God. Notice that they said: We didn’t start hearing how the boy and his mother went on talk radio and appeared on Dr. Phil or Oprah. It was “A great prophet has appeared…” and “God has come…” The credit goes only to God. Many of the other miracles talked about the “faith” of the people. But Jesus didn’t even wait for this woman’s faith. He saw, he felt, he spoke and he acted. It was pure grace.
  4. God motivated righteous gossip. Life will never be the same for anyone who was there. Pretty soon they were texting all of their friends (texting in those days was usually done with paper, or by courier) and from the little town of Nain, everyone found out about Jesus. What happens in Folsom better not stay in Folsom! God’s reputation is enhanced when God works and his people rebroadcast that. “In the same way, let your light shine before men, that they may see your good deeds and praise your Father in heaven.” (Matthew 5:16)

Conclusion

There is no better example of the transforming power of God’s compassion than in the life of Jesus.  “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only son so that whoever believes in him should not die but have everlasting life.” (John 3:16) Whatever our situation: financial meltdown, relationship fractures, failing health, disappointment with ourselves, God sees. And his response was to send Jesus.
Have you invited God to transform the most difficult situations in your life?
Maybe you’re in one of those situations right now. Or maybe you still have the hurt or shame from something that happened in the past. God sees you. Will you trust him? The transformation process is often not comfortable, but it is worth it. Maybe you need to pray, “God, I am hurting. I don’t know why it is happening. But I want you to come in and take over and transform this into something good. Just like you did for Jesus and the cross. In Jesus name, amen.”
Have you signed up to help transform the world around you?
In your neighborhood? You are in the middle, who is across the street, who is behind you, who is on the floor above? In your job, who is in the next cubicle? In you school, who is in the seat in front of you, to your left? That is the place that God has placed you to join him in transforming the evil in this world into good outcomes.

When God does something amazing, will your talk about it?

Maybe God has worked miracles in your life, but you have been quiet about it, or haven't even been thankful to him.
In his book The Pressure's Off, psychologist Larry Crabb uses a story from his childhood to illustrate our need to delight in God through adversity:
One Saturday afternoon, I decided I was a big boy and could use the bathroom without anyone's help. So I climbed the stairs, closed and locked the door behind me, and for the next few minutes felt very self-sufficient.
Then it was time to leave. I couldn't unlock the door. I tried with every ounce of my three-year-old strength, but I couldn't do it. I panicked. I felt again like a very little boy as the thought went through my head, "I might spend the rest of my life in this bathroom."
My parents—and likely the neighbors—heard my desperate scream.
"Are you okay?" Mother shouted through the door she couldn't open from the outside. "Did you fall? Have you hit your head?"
"I can't unlock the door!" I yelled. "Get me out of here!"
I wasn't aware of it right then, but Dad raced down the stairs, ran to the garage to find the ladder, hauled it off the hooks, and leaned it against the side of the house just beneath the bedroom window. With adult strength, he pried it open, then climbed into my prison, walked past me, and with that same strength, turned the lock and opened the door.
 "Thanks, Dad," I said—and ran out to play. – Larry Crabb, The Pressure's Off (WaterBrook Press, 2002); pp. 222-223;
Sometimes we are like that with God. We are in a tight spot and God answers, we run out to play. We’ve forgotten to give credit to God, we’ve forgotten God, and God wonders “do they even like me, or are they just after the stuff—are they just after the miracles.” We barely thank him and no one else knows what God has done. And you wonder why miracles never show up in your neighborhood. Don’t take for granted how God has rescued you.

This church is one of God’s miracles. Watch what happens through FCC. And then, don’t be quiet.
You are one of God’s miracles. Watch what God does through you. And then, don’t be quiet.

Sermon: Kick Off (Acts 2:38-47): Pastor Tito Dizon

This message was preached at Folsom Community Church on January 22nd, 2012 by Pastor Tito Dizon.

Introduction

Thank you for coming here to grace our Kickoff for this year. We are so honored to have you here. From Natomas Church, Cornerstone, Ignite , CPW, & friends of our members.

Building church or starting a church is the business of our Lord. Matthew 16:18 says, I will build my church, (He will build it), our job is to cooperate with Him.

Allow him to use us start, sustain & grow his church.

We did a soft Launch last year, after 1 year practicing, learning , adjusting, tweaking, we are saying to our community, we are ready for the Kickoff of the ministry this year.  We are thankful for all of you who have come here to encourage us, pray for us, support us, introduce us to your friends here in our community if they don’t have a church yet or haven’t found the wonderful beautiful relationship w/ our God & Savior, the Lord Jesus.

God wants his church planted & built mainly for 5 reasons. God knows that no matter how we live in this world w/o him, our life will still be empty, lacking meaning, & will go spin out of control soon if not later.

“Without God life makes no sense” - Russian Novelist, Andrei Bitov

Blaise Pascal said, “There is a God shaped vacuum in the heart of every human being and it cannot be satisfied by any created thing or creature, only by God made known through Jesus Christ.”

Without God, life has no purpose, & without purpose, life has no meaning.

God uses the Church to helps us find life’s purpose & meaning. Our answer to Life’s 5 greatest Questions will help us understand this & how the church fits into our lives. So I want to share with you the answer to Life’s 5 greatest questions.

The first question is:

1st What will be the center of my life?

Who are you going to live for? What are you going to build your life around?

A.    Career, your family, a sport or hobby, money, having fun, or many other activities. These are all good things but they don’t belong at the center of your life. None is strong enough to hold us together when life starts breaking apart.

B.     Marriage is falling apart- hobby won’t help me,  Children going astray- our possessions wouldn’t be able to help- maybe even the reason for them to go  away, so busy accumulating things….,  We get terminally ill ….money can just do so much, we get laid off & bankrupt... friends start to leave us. We need an unshakeable center. What or who should be at the center of our life? God wants to be …that’s why there is the command  Love the Lord with all your heart…How do you know when God is at the center of your life? It starts w/ worship. You worship.  When we express our love to God, we’re worshipping him…God wants to hear that.

C.     Thanking Him, Just adoring Him for who he is…. The church is the vehicle, the instrument in w/c God uses to remind people to worship him

D.    When people are absent from the church…who do you think they are worshipping? ..too tired, sleep; NFL, NBA, Baseball; 4 cars to clean, 5 bedroom to fix & a ton of laundry…They worship themselves, their sports, their toys their cars….

E.     Inspite of the big churches here surrounding us, majority are still not in church or won’t fit even if all the churches are maxed out of their seating capacity. That’s why God wants the church….So few in this world worship him or truly worship him….

F.      Throughout Scripture we’re commanded to celebrate God’s presence by magnifying the Lord & exalting his name. Psalm 34:3 says (NASB) O magnify the Lord w/ me & let us exalt his name together.”

G.    When your world falls apart…God will be there with you. You’ll not be alone….

Another important Life’s question is….w/c the church can help is

2nd What will be the character of my life?

What kind of person will I be?

A     Remember we will take our character for eternity but not our career, possessions, hobby & surely not the character of the sinful flesh. Make a list of the character qualities you want to develop or work on.

B    It is stated in Gal.5 a contrast of 2 Characters (Own way vs. God’s way) : (Message & NLT)

The Message paraphrase                                                         NLT Version

19-21It is obvious what kind of life develops out of trying to get your own way all the time:
 repetitive, loveless, cheap sex;
a stinking accumulation of mental and emotional garbage;
 frenzied and joyless grabs for happiness;

20 trinket gods; magic-show religion;
paranoid loneliness;
cutthroat competition;
all-consuming-yet-never-satisfied wants;
 a brutal temper;
an impotence to love or be loved;
divided homes and divided lives;
small-minded and lopsided pursuits;
21 the vicious habit of depersonalizing everyone into a rival; uncontrolled and uncontrollable addictions;
ugly parodies of community.

If you use your freedom this way, you will not inherit God's kingdom.

22 But what happens when we live God's way?
He brings gifts into our lives, much the same way that fruit appears in an orchard—
things like affection for others,
exuberance about life, serenity.
We develop a willingness to stick with things,
a sense of compassion in the heart,
and a conviction that a basic holiness permeates things and people.
We find ourselves involved in loyal commitments,
not needing to force our way in life,
able to marshal and direct our energies wisely.

 19

sexual immorality,
impurity,

lustful pleasures,

20 idolatry, sorcery,
hostility,
quarreling,
jealousy,
outbursts of anger,
selfish ambition,
dissension,
division,
21 envy,
drunkenness,
wild parties

love,
joy, peace,
patience,
kindness,
 goodness,

 faithfulness,
23 gentleness,
and self-control.

C    The Beatitudes: Mathew  5

3a  Blessed are the poor in spirit  … recognizing one’s deep spiritual poverty before God
4 blessed are those who mourn  … of our sin
5  blessed are the meek             ...or gentle, not assertively rough to further our agenda
6 blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness…pursues purity & justice
7 blessed are the merciful                …forgiving bec. Christ has mercy on us
8  blessed are the pure in heart      …purified of sin
9 blessed are the peacemaker … showing people how to cooperate instead of compete or fight.
10 God blesses those who are persecuted for doing right

D    And, where can we find this lifestyle? Character? Attitudes. Rare, becoming extinct, We need to be a member of a few good men & women.

E    The church will help us become like him. People become who they worship- what or who in the center of their life

F    The word we commonly use to refer to this is discipleship. The church exist to edify or educate God’s people.Discipleship is the process of helping people become more like Christ in their thoughts, feelings & actions. Starts when born again & continues throughout the rest of his life. Not only reach people but teach them…to attain maturity Ephes.4:12b-13.

G    When people see us, they see the Character of Jesus? Do they? We were created to reflect him? Not our individual self, not the world, surely not Satan but mind you.

H    We reflect the image of God. A  Loving, caring, God. Greatest compliment can say about you: Kamukha mo ang Diyos

The third important question is

3rd what will be the contribution of my life?

How can you make a difference?  The church is here to help us leave a lasting legacy in this world.

A    The church exists to minister to people  The 2nd greatest commandment says : Love your neighbor as yourself Each time we are reaching out in love to others, we are ministering to them. This is what we call is ministry- demonstrating God’s love to others by meeting their  needs

B   The church tries its best to meet All kinds of needs: spiritual, emotional, relational, physical (CDO). Jesus said even a cup of cold water (Text) given in his name is considered a ministry & will not go unrewarded.

C    What will be your ministry/role in the Body or Church? & in the community? Do you have one?

D   It is better to give than to receive. Do we always want to get… sometimes we think of that even of the church.  Ex. What can this church offer me…without  realizing that our needs are met as we give to others.

E    3rd what will be the contribution of my life?  How can you make a difference?  Suggestion to you is by being part of the church to serve one another.  Ex. In Church:we can support financially, volunteer. Ex. In our Community: newspaper is asking for…food donations, sweaters, tutors, coaches;  Cagayan De Oro-give

If we will open ourselves to God …He will use us. Be pro-active, seek involvement.

Another importance of the church is answering the 4th question….

4th What will be the community of my life?

A   God didn’t meant for man to live  alone: The Trinity is an Example: Father, Son & HS. Live in perfect unity & harmony.

B   Being in church is being part of a family. The symbol, the Initiation the Lord used to show that is through  Baptism. Baptism means to be immerse.  It symbolizes incorporation into the body of Christ. Or fellowship/ identification w/ the body of Christ.

C   It says to the world, this person is now one of us. When new believers are baptized, we welcome them into the fellowship of the family.

D   We are not alone, we have each other for support. We are family. How will you demonstrate your commitment to other believers & connection to the family of God.

Application: Green Communication card

E   To w/c church family will you be joined as a functioning member Christ loved the church (Ephes. 5:25). The more you mature the more you will love the Church & sacrifice for her  like Christ.

The last important question is…

5th What will be the communication of my life?

A    We exist to communicate God’s word. That is our Mission in life…mission of FCC

The Commitment to share your testimony & the good news with others. Go & make disciples This is what we call evangelism.

B   The task of evangelism is so important that Christ actually gave us in the Gospels. Before a person leaves…or dies, we hang on to his /her last words…as very important or crucial….

Last Ch of Mk 16:15 “Go into all the world & preach the good news to all creation” Good news: Christ coming (C’mas), His death on the cross & resurrection(easter), & his promised return (2nd coming)

Last Ch of Luke 24:47-48 “Repentance & forgiveness of sins will be preached in his name to all nations, beginning at Jerusalem. 48 You are witnesses of these things… “

2nd to last chapter John 20:21 “As the father has sent me, I am sending you…” It is more than a responsibility, it is a privilege. What a privilege! We are invited to be a part of bringing people into God’s family.

C   I don’t know of a more significant cause to give one’s life to. A lot of cause oriented group out there…. Yes we can be involved w/ so many causes in this world, the 99%, tea Party, Saving an animal, saving the planet, Rotary Club, Kiwanis, fight against terrorism, human trafficking etc etc etc. …But are we involved in God’s cause.

If you knew the cure for cancer, I’m sure you’d do everything you could to get the news out.  It would save millions of lives But you & I already know something better: We’ve been given the Gospel of eternal life to share, w/c is the greatest news of all!

D    As long as there is one person in the world who does not know Christ, the church has a mandate to keep growing. Growth is not optional, it is commanded by Jesus. God may give you a special target group of people to focus on reaching. FCC’s target- people who won’t go to…. A big Caucasian church….

In summary:

A   5 Life’s Greatest Question  suggestion: Read  Rick Warren’s Purpose Driven Life book, this is the source of this material with my own revision.

1st What will be the center of my life?  My Relationship w/ God as shown primarily through my Worship

2nd What will be the character of my life?  The character of Jesus. I want people to see Jesus in me. The church can disciple you into His image.

3rd What will be the contribution of my life?  Serving others like Jesus. Wash feet, feed the hungry, heal the sick… He ministered to others.

4th What will be the community of my life? The church is my family  & I will be committed to the church, like Christ w/ His bride.

5th What will be the communication of my life?   The Commitment to share our testimony & the good news with others.

B   Example of NT Christians of living this kind of life     Acts 2:38-47

MISSION
38 Peter replied, “Each of you must repent of your sins and turn to God, and be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins…
40 Then Peter continued preaching…strongly urging all his listeners, “Save yourselves from this crooked generation!”

MEMBERSHIP
41 Those who believed…were baptized and added to the church that day—about 3,000 in all.
47b... And each day the Lord added to their fellowship those who were being saved.

MATURITY
42 All the believers devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching, and to fellowship, and to sharing in meals, and to prayer.

MINISTRY
43 …the apostles performed many miraculous signs and wonders.
44 And all the believers met together in one place and shared everything they had.
45 They sold their property and possessions and shared the money with those in need.

MAGNIFY
46 They worshiped together at the Temple each day, met in homes for the Lord’s Supper, and shared their meals with great joy and generosity
47 all the while praising God...

C    God’s purposes for the church are also his purposes for every Christian.

As individual followers of Christ we are to use our lives in worship, ministry, evangelism, discipleship & fellowship. The task of bringing people to Christ & into membership in his family, developing them into mature disciples, empowering & equipping them for personal ministry, sending them out to fulfill their mission is the greatest purpose on earth…

D     Someday each will give an account to God regarding how seriously we took this responsibility. I have no doubt it is worth living & dying for.

E     My hope & prayer is that you will also accept the challenge to help us achieve these things- praying, supporting, encouraging, recommending, bringing people…. We  believed God for miracles, & we’ve expected him to use us-by grace. That is our choice.

There is no greater use of our lives.

Sermon: Following Jesus-Our Choice, A Sacrifice Worth It (Mark 10:17-31): Pastor Tito Dizon

This message was preached at Folsom Community Church by Pastor Tito Dizon on 15 January 2012

Mark 10: 17-31       Following Jesus- Our Choice, a sacrifice worth it.
Dayday & I went on a CPW Retreat last Sunday to Wednesday and this is one of the text that encouraged me. I’m sure it would encourage you also so I want to share it w/ you esp. as we prepare for the Kick-Off next week.
17 As Jesus was starting out on his way to Jerusalem, a man came running up to him, knelt down, and asked, “Good Teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?”
18 “Why do you call me good?” Jesus asked. “Only God is truly good.
19 But to answer your question, you know the commandments: ‘You must not murder. You must not commit adultery. You must not steal. You must not testify falsely. You must not cheat anyone. Honor your father and mother.’”
20 “Teacher,” the man replied, “I’ve obeyed all these commandments since I was young.”
21 Looking at the man, Jesus felt genuine love for him. “There is still one thing you haven’t done,” he told him. “Go and sell all your possessions and give the money to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me.”
22 At this the man’s face fell, and he went away very sad, for he had many possessions.
23 Jesus looked around and said to his disciples, “How hard it is for the rich to enter the Kingdom of God!”
24 This amazed them. But Jesus said again, “Dear children, it is very hard to enter the Kingdom of God.
25 In fact, it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich person to enter the Kingdom of God!”
26 The disciples were astounded. “Then who in the world can be saved?” they asked.
27 Jesus looked at them intently and said, “Humanly speaking, it is impossible. But not with God. Everything is possible with God.”
28 Then Peter began to speak up. “We’ve given up everything to follow you,” he said.
29 “Yes,” Jesus replied, “and I assure you that everyone who has given up house or brothers or sisters or mother or father or children or property, for my sake and for the Good News,
30 will receive now in return a hundred times as many houses, brothers, sisters, mothers, children, and property—along with persecution. And in the world to come that person will have eternal life.
31 But many who are the greatest now will be least important then, and those who seem least important now will be the greatest then
Pray for God’s message: received openly that will stir our hearts to be more like Jesus our Savior. By the way Kick Off means we’re just starting this year with a big promotion for our church at the start of the year, we had a soft launching last year, this time we are calling our friends & partners to come & see our church so that they can support us, pray for us, endorse us to their contacts, This month is our 1st year anniversary, we are also telling our neighborhood, Folsom, EDH, O, RC, Granite bay to Placerville & Roseville that we are here. A Church they can consider. I believe we are ready, learned a lot from last year, and still learning and willing to trust God more for this year.
Going back to Mark 10, we’ll relate this to our circumstance right now.
There are 4 main Characters here: God, Rich man, Peter & the Disciples.

Mark 10: 17-31 Our Choice
17 As Jesus was starting out on his way to Jerusalem, a man came running up to him, knelt down, and asked, “Good Teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?”
What was the rich man asking?- eternal life? What is eternal life? Good Question?
I was asking that when I was still a boy but not sure of the answer. I got an idea just like this person. I believe this is the question of a lot of people, maybe not in their younger years but in their older age, when they feel their youthful strength is waning &/or death is knocking at the door…they’ll think of this. Actually billions of dollars are spent in extending our lives, to discover the solution to perpetual youthfulness…
How about you? Do you know the answer? Is this important to you now? Are you interested w/ that question? How important is that to you?
18 “Why do you call me good?” Jesus asked. “Only God is truly good.
Why do you think Jesus ask this? To show His goodness is way way way different from us. How do you define being “good”? He is not an ordinary good person but the Holy, Righteous, w/o sin God. Our goodness is nothing compared to God
19 But to answer your question, you know the commandments: ‘You must not murder[#6]. You must not commit adultery [#7]. You must not steal [#8]. You must not testify falsely[#9]. You must not cheat anyone [#10]?. Honor your father and mother[#5].’”
  1. Where can we find these commandments? (Bible) Where else? Formerly in schools, court houses, Homes? Office? Church
  2. Why do you think institutions are removing them? Can somebody be behind it?
  3. Do you think it would be helpful to you & me to be always reminded of the 10 commandments? & for others.
How do we find (discover/learn) these again? Beliefs nowadays- you can believe in everything…no absolutes, no compass.
20 “Teacher,” the man replied, “I’ve obeyed all these commandments since I was young.”
Have we? Observation: Obeyed the horizontal dimension of the law: Loving Others:
The Rich Man left out Commandments #1 "You shall have no other gods", #2 "You shall not make for yourself an idol" #3 "shall not misuse the name of the Lord" & #4 "rememberto keep the Sabbath Day holy".
#1-4 are the Vertical component with of the commandments which talk about loving God w/ all our heart, soul & strength.
21 Looking at the man, Jesus felt genuine love for him. “There is still one thing you haven’t done,” he told him. “Go and sell all your possessions and give the money to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me.”
2 things that the Lord wants him to do, what were they?
  1. Possessions/ Properties/ Riches/ Money : Sell, & Give- What’s the application of this for us?
  2. Come, follow me-What’s the application for this for us?
22 At this the man’s face fell, and he went away very sad, for he had many possessions.
Why was this man sad? Opposite of the world…should be happy? The choice…, his possessions own him. Money can buy a lot of things, but there are some things it cannot buy.
  • Money can buy a bed, but not sleep.
  • Money can buy books, but not brains .
  • Money can food, but not an appetite.
  • Money can buy a house, but not a home.
  • Money can buy medicine, but not health.
  • Money can buy amusement, but not happiness.
  • Money can buy finery, but not beauty.
  • Money can buy a crucifix, but not a Savior.
Even if we don’t say it, it is shown or will be noticed.
Why do you think it is hard? Observe the church, who are in it? A few rich, mostly middle class & poor. Rich don’t need god….that’s what they think. They are self sufficient.
26 The disciples were astounded. “Then who in the world can be saved?” they asked.
27 Jesus looked at them intently and said, “Humanly speaking, it is impossible. But not with God.
Everything is possible with God.”
What do you mean “humanly speaking, it is impossible?” John 3:16: Story of Christmas & Easter. We can be saved through faith in Jesus not by our works.
28 Then Peter began to speak up. “We’ve given up everything to follow you,” he said.
29 “Yes,” Jesus replied, “and I assure you that everyone who has given up house or brothers or sisters or mother or father or children or property, for my sake and for the Good News,
Does the Lord knows what we’ve given up to follow him? You bet he is taking note. HE knows our bank account balance in heaven. God sees, records and rewards every sacrifice that is made for Him.
A What 3 things the Lord knows that his disciples have given up? They had given up homes, families, money or businesses, etc, all because Jesus had asked them too.
  • Home: Giving up the comfort of home sweet home even if the weather is Cold or Hot or Raining, Opening your homes even if some responsibilities goes along with it like cleaning your house, washing the dishes, preparing food
  • Relationship: spouse, children, parents (mother & father), vacationing w/ your bro. & sis. Giving up times spend with love ones just to be able to attend & participate in church activities.
  • Field: On top of our busy job, we think of our church’s responsibilities: invite people, prepare food, practice, lead
B For whose sake? Jesus & the Good news.
30 will receive now in return a hundred times as many houses, brothers, sisters, mothers, children, and property—along with persecution. And in the world to come that person will have eternal life.
He tells them that what they have walked away from might seem like a lot to them, but God has far more in their future than they left behind in their past. Some observations of the verse:
They will receive now (rewards), not later or heaven
  1. Receive a 100x, did it say 100% or“an hundredfold”, He simply means that it is more than you can imagine. Hyperbole…to get the point. Give it back to you….things you sacrifice He is not saying that if you give a dollar, He will give you one hundred in return. He might, but He might give you a thousand!
  2. Houses, Relationships, Properties. Now, God doesn’t always pay off on Fridays, but He always pays off and He always pays well. If you serve Jesus, He will see to it that you are blessed beyond your wildest dreams! In this present age… They left one house; God knows how to open a hundred doors. They left one family; God has made them a part of a family that encompasses the world. They may have become separated from and earthly brother, but God has given them more brothers in Christ than they can imagine. Field: God supplying all our needs. Those who willingly turn loose of this world to follow Jesus will discover that God has far more in store for them than the sum total of all they left behind.
  3. Persecutions: He also lets us know that His “hundredfold” will come to us with “persecutions”. There will be a price to pay for following Jesus. Example: Tim tebow- making a stand for Christ. Widely criticized. Not everyone will be excited to see you serving the Lord. Difficulties and trials will come because of your commitment, but God will bless you in spite of any trials you might face along the way.
  4. World to come: that person will have Eternal life, that is the ultimate…

30b He tells us that those who turn loose of this world to follow Him will be blessed in this life, but they will also receive eternal life.
Jesus tells us not to worry about what this world has to offer. It simply cannot compare to what the Lord has for those who trust Him. Do we have what matters most? In the end, it will not matter how much money you have accumulated, or what you leave behind.

If you have Him, you are saved and you get to go to Heaven. If you do not have Him, you are lost and you will go to Hell.
31 But many who are the greatest now will be least important then, and those who seem least important now will be the greatest then
Those who are first in this world’s accounting will finish last in the race to Heaven. We see celebrities and wealthy people and there is a tendency for us to think that they are somebody’s. In God’s eyes, it is not riches that make a person somebody special; it is faith in Jesus. There are billionaires and millionaires who do not even make a blip on God’s radar. But, there are poor, faithful saints of God who have His attention all the time.

One day, when we get home, all those who reached for first place here will not even cross the finish line there. At the same time, those who faithfully lived for the Lord here will be rewarded there. A bumper sticker that said, “He that has the most toys wins!” That is not even close to the truth!

The truth: He that has Jesus wins and he that does not have Jesus has nothing, even though he may own everything!
Action Point: Following Jesus- Our Choice, a sacrifice worth it.

Conclusion: So, what can we take away from this message? There are several things to think about as we close.

What will we give up to follow Jesus, to be part of his church?

Has our faith ever cost us anything? Do we have any reason to expect that God would reward us for our service? I believe this year, we are ready to launch out more, to trust God more in telling our neighbors of the love of Jesus & how it can help their present situation & for eternity. Marriage. Parenting. Jobs. Sinful habits. Addictions, or just simply live a better life…

Having a church involves a lot of work & sacrifice:  Just like a football team in the NFL- work hard, practice, be in good health, be disciplined- diet, sleep, practice, Emotionally: positive, encourage one another, teamwork-work in unison,

For us: The church: Hard work- Practice (P&W), Preparation, Study, other sp.discipline- pray, devotion, attend meetings, Care Group etc. What will we give up to follow Jesus & the good news? Maybe more…Talk to your spouse (or w/ children) about this

Sermon: Fruit Happens (Galatians 5:22-23): Tim Lewis

This sermon was preached on 1/8/12 at Folsom Community Church by Tim Lewis

Fruit Happens
Galatians 5:22-23

Introduction: New Years’ Resolution Checkup

At my house, whenever New Year’s comes around, there is always the question of my resolutions. What do I want to do better in 2012 than I did in 2011? Maybe lose a few pounds. Maybe get better grades. Maybe get a promotion. Maybe pay off the credit cards or put some money in savings. Maybe communicate better with my wife or my kids.

Every year, when the kids were younger, we would tuck away our resolutions when we put the Christmas tree away and then review them again when we set up for the next Christmas. Or rather, when I say we, I mean them. I would make resolutions, but I wouldn’t write them down. Helen is convinced this is so that no one would know that I didn’t keep any of them.
Whatever you have decided to do for the next year, I know that God already has plans for your 2012. The Bible says:

For we are God’s workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do. – Ephesians 2:10
God has already set up ‘good works’ appointments for you in 2012. You have a “rendezvous with destiny” were God will put you in the right place at the right time to do the right thing.  Are you ready?

Because it isn’t always easy. [Examples of difficulty doing the right thing]
But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law. – Galatians 5:22-23
Wouldn’t you like to be able to respond to difficult people with love? Wouldn’t you like to respond to depressing situations with joy? To times of conflict and stress with peace? To delays and frustration with patience? To rudeness with kindness? To selfishness with goodness? To betrayal with faithfulness? To laziness and anger with gentleness and self-control?

The good news is…you can. The fruit described here is the natural result of the Spirit of God’s work in our life. When God gives us the new life that he promised because of Jesus’ sacrifice on the cross, it starts a process of transformation—of maturing—that shows up in our attitude. The Bible calls this improved attitude a fruit because it is sweet result of our new life in Jesus.
During the depression the field of Yates Pool was a sheep ranch owned by a man named Yates. Mr. Yates wasn't able to make enough on his ranching operation to pay the principal and interest on the mortgage, so he was in danger of losing his ranch. With little money for clothes or food, his family (like many others) had to live on government subsidy.
Day after day, as he grazed his sheep over those rolling West Texas hills, he was no doubt greatly troubled about how he would pay his bills. Then a seismographic crew from an oil company came into the area and told him there might be oil on his land. They asked permission to drill a wildcat well, and he signed a lease contract.
At 1,115 feet they struck a huge oil reserve. The first well came in at 80,000 barrels a day. Many subsequent wells were more than twice as large. In fact, 30 years after the discovery, a government test of one of the wells showed it still had the potential flow of 125,000 barrels of oil a day.
And Mr. Yates owned it all. The day he purchased the land he had received the oil and mineral rights. Yet, he'd been living on relief. A multimillionaire living in poverty. The problem? He didn't know the oil was there even though he owned it.
Many Christians live in spiritual poverty. They are entitled to the gifts of the Holy Spirit and his energizing power, but they are not aware of their birthright. (Greg Asimakoupoulos, Naperville, Illinois; source: Bill Bright, "How to Be Filled with the Spirit" (Campus Crusade publication))
But-here’s the question-if the fruit is supposed to be a natural result, then why don’t I always feel loving and joyful? Good question. We’ll look in the Bible together to get the answers. To get those answers, we need to back up and look at this whole issue from God’s perspective.
1.       God wants to change me.
2.       God changes me by changing my attitudes.
3.       The Bible calls these new attitudes “fruit”
4.       Life is a test to see if the new attitudes are real.

God Wants To Change Me
First, God wants to change me. Look at what the Bible says:

Don’t copy the behavior and customs of this world, but let God transform you into a new person by changing the way you think. – Romans 12:2a (NLT)

God loves you the way you are. But God also loves you too much to leave you that way.

God sees a gap between the person you are now and the person you could be. We don’t always see the gap. We think tweak, but God is thinking overhaul. We are thinking caterpillar, but God is thinking butterfly. We are thinking crawling along, but God is thinking: fly.

If you continue the way you are now, you are either cultivating God’s fruit, or you are cultivating sin’s fruit.

God Changes Me By Changing My Attitudes
Second, God changes me by changing my attitudes.

Don’t copy the behavior and customs of this world, but let God transform you into a new person by changing the way you think. Then you will learn to know God’s will for you, which is good and pleasing and perfect.  – Romans 12:2 (NLT)

God changes the way you think so that you think the way He thinks.
God has plans for your life. God has plans for your home, for you school, for your job. He wants to introduce a miracle into the most difficult circumstances in life, and that miracle is you. By changing who you are—by changing your attitudes—he is introducing a miracle into every place that you walk.  You may have as many problems in your life as anyone else, maybe more, but the way you deal with them shows that God is present.

The Bible Calls These New Attitudes “Fruit”

Third, the Bible calls these new attitudes fruit.

But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law. – Galatians 5:22-23
Let’s look at these new attitudes:

Love, Joy. (Luke 10:21), Peace, Patience, Kindness, Goodness, Faithfulness, Gentleness, Self-Control,
We’re not going to go into all of them right now, but let me point out a few things from this list.

  1. One fruit, many benefits.  It says “the fruit of the Spirit is…” See love, joy, peace, patience…they aren’t fruit, they are a part of the fruit. They are more like the vitamins. When you get the Spirit, you get the whole package. There isn’t someone with the “fruit of joy” and someone else with the “fruit of patience”
  2. The fruit don’t change the circumstances; rather they change how you deal with the circumstances.
  3. Fruit should happen. It says, “Against such things there is no law.” For Jesus’ people, there is no external constraint, no law, no barrier to you having these new attitudes. Why? Because fruit is the natural outcome of growth and development  (http://masteringhorticulture.blogspot.com , 2/2811) Listen: My mom was telling me about a fruit tree in their yard. When they got it, their neighbor offered them some really high-powered fertilizer, which they put around tree. And that tree took off, it grew, it put out all sorts of branches and tons of green leaves. But no fruit. The healthy, mature tree has fruit. The healthy, mature Christian  has fruit.
  4. We don’t produce fruit, we bear fruit. Jesus is the vine, we are the branches. Sometimes we try produce bear our own fruit, and it looks like the good thing, but really its disappointing. If you go to the grocery store in mid-winter and pick up a tomato, you will often find they are gorgeous but tasteless. See, they are picked will green--still immature--and then treated with ethylene gas to make them redden. But they have never had the time on the vine to generate the sugars that make them truly tasty. They have the appearance of beautifulfruit, but they aren’t sweet-they are sour. The sweetest fruit are harvested from the plant, at the right time. Here’s my point: these new attitudes are no generated by you, they are acted upon by you. They are a gift from God-- a natural out-working of the spiritual DNA that God gives you.
Life Is A Test To See If The New Attitudes Are Real
Fourth, Life is a Test to See if the New Attitudes are Real, or just a fad. You see, you can make all of the New Year’s resolutions that you want; you can talk about how 2012 will be the year of the “new you” with “new attitudes” and a “new outlook on life.” but the real test is how you act the next time someone offers you a donut, or a drink, or a stab in the back. Sometimes we can simulate the fruit of the Spirit for a while (Filipino: ningas kugon) but the consistent lifestyle is only a product of a continued, life sustaining relationship with Jesus.

Remember the story of Peter, the friend of Jesus? During the final night of Jesus’ life and Jesus must take the final journey, to the cross, by himself. And Jesus says, in John 13:36, “Where I am going you cannot follow now, but you will follow later.” And Peter asked, “Lord, why can’t I follow you now. I will lay down my life for you.” You know, in that moment, I believe Peter really believed what he said. But then real life continued, Jesus was arrested, and while waiting and watching to see what would happen to Jesus, Peter denied he even knew Jesus. The fruit of the Spirit was faithfulness, but when real life continued, the fruit Peter showed was betrayal.
If we have Jesus; if we have the Spirit of God working in us-why do we see another type of fruit growing inside us? Because there is another type of fruit being produced! And that fruit is not from God, but rather it is a product of our flesh, our sin nature, and it is in direct competition for the real estate of our heart. Paul says, just a few verses before this:

For the sinful nature desires what is contrary to the Spirit, and the Spirit what is contrary to the sinful nature. They are in conflict with each other, so that you do not do what you want. …
The acts of the sinful nature are obvious: sexual immorality, impurity and debauchery;  idolatry and witchcraft; hatred, discord, jealousy, fits of rage, selfish ambition, dissensions, factions  and envy; drunkenness, orgies, and the like. – Galatians 5:17, 19-21a
Wow. What a list! Sounds like Jersey Shores or a frat party. But really it shows our natural tendency, our sin tendency. Think of it like this: what would you do if there were no consequences? Jesus knew this and that’s why he said anger is like murder, and lust is like adultery. If you didn’t like someone, just wipe them out video game style. If you liked someone you could just take them, Playboy- or Playgirl style. The way we would act without any "law" or consequences is really the type of people we are. And it isnt' pretty.

There is a battle for territory in my heart-between the new life and the old life.
The poet Carl Sandburg once said, “There is an eagle in me that wants to soar, and there is a hippopotamus in me that wants to wallow in the mud.” (cited by Richard Hansen in “A Good Mystery, Preaching Today Audio, issue 253)
The new spiritual DNA that God provides through Jesus is there, trying to transform you from the inside out.  But the old, cancerous DNA, is still there, producing its fruit in competition. Which will your heart choose?

Conclusion: So Why Don’t I See The Fruit?

But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control.– Galatians 5:22-23a
I remember about a month ago when I started thinking about this topic, I began to ask myself: why am I not seeing these attitudes in my life? Why is there no joy? Why no patience? I think the Bible gives four possible answers:

  1. Maybe we don’t have these new attitudes because we aren’t connected to Jesus. Look what he said:
If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing. – John 15:5b
  1. Maybe we are suppressing the good fruit.   Like spiritual Roundup. The fruit of the Spirit-the good things are there, within our reach, but because of our habits or because of our stubbornness, we prefer the selfish fruit of the flesh. You sometimes when you get angry, there is a point when you know you could let go of that anger but oooh it feels delicious to hold on to it. At that point, we have a choice of which fruit to suppress. We can suppress the fruit of our self, which is self-righteousness and anger and bitterness, or we can supress the fruit of the Spirit, which is love and peace. Which fruit will you pick? Sometimes we are like Christian atheists (see what Pauls says in Titus):
They claim to know God, but by their actions they deny him. – Titus 1:16
  1. Maybe we are in a season of pruning. Jesus said that when we are capable of fruit, for whatever reason, we fail to bear,
…he prunes the branches that do bear fruit so they will produce even more. – John 15:2b
This is a season of pruning. He is giving us a chance to do what we were spiritual created to do: bear fruit and bear more fruit. Maybe he affects our health, or maybe he affects our circumstances--temporarily painful but ultimately profitable.
  1. Or maybe we are producing seedless fruit. My wife, Helen, the horticulturist, wrte: “The fruit is a seed carrier. We all enjoy the seedless fruit that we buy from the grocery stores because they are so easy to eat. But let me tell you – Seedless fruits are abnormal fruits. Seedless fruits are not performing what they are supposed to do in the natural sense of life. Their services end where the fruits are eaten or when they rot. God intended for the fruit to carry the possibility of a new life. Our life as Christians should bear the fruit that carries the seed of the knowledge of Christ.   In the eyes of God, the seeded fruit is more valuable than its seedless counterpart.” (http://masteringhorticulture.blogspot.com, ibid)
Without Jesus, our best attempts to change our life and our attitudes will fail, because we don’t have the new life that comes from Jesus. Without Jesus, no amount of cultivation of our natural selves will produce good attitudes. That’s why Jesus died, so that he could give us the new life. Maybe we need to pray the prayer: “Jesus, I don’t do the right things because I have never really been connected to you. I know you paid the price on the cross, so that I can really change my attitudes. As much as I know how, I am going to let you be in charge of my life.”

Every fruit is a seed bearer.

Sermon: New Years Sunday and Communion Sunday (Psalm 90), Pastor Olojan

This sermon was preached at Folsom Community Church on January 1, 2012 by Pastor Sanny Olojan.

These are the sermon notes:

Significance of Psalm 90
All the Psalms were collected around 445BC (1100 years and 37 generations after Moses wrote this around 1490BC)
1 A Prayer of Moses, the man of God. Lord, You have been our dwelling place in all generations.
2 Before the mountains were born Or You gave birth to the earth and the world, Even from everlasting to everlasting, You are God.
3 You turn man back into dust And say, “Return, O children of men.”
4 For a thousand years in Your sight Are like yesterday when it passes by, Or as a watch in the night.
5 You have swept them away like a flood, they fall asleep; In the morning they are like grass which sprouts anew.
6 In the morning it flourishes and sprouts anew; Toward evening it fades and withers away.
7 For we have been consumed by Your anger And by Your wrath we have been dismayed.
8 You have placed our iniquities before You, Our secret sins in the light of Your presence.
Central Theme of Psalm 90
12 So teach us to number our days, That we may present to You a heart of wisdom.

Number of Days Left in Your Life:

25,578 if you were born today
23,751 after u turn 5yo this yr
21,924 after u r 10 years old this yr
20,097 after u turn 15 yr old
18,270 after u r 20 yo this yr

God's Thoughts On Numbering Our Days
13 Do return, O LORD; how long will it be? And be sorry for Your servants.
14 O satisfy us in the morning with Your lovingkindness, That we may sing for joy and be glad all our days.
15 Make us glad according to the days You have afflicted us, and the years we have seen evil
16 Let Your work appear to Your servants And Your majesty to their children.
17 Let the favor of the Lord our God be upon us; And confirm for us the work of our hands; Yes, confirm the work of our hands.

We should be:

1.Eternal
2.Fruit
3.fruitful
