God’s promise on pouring on the Holy Spirit on you & me

Joel 2    God’s promise on pouring on the Holy Spirit on you & me
16 No, what you see was predicted long ago by the prophet Joel:
17 ‘In the last days,’ God says, ‘I will pour out my Spirit upon all people. Your sons and daughters will prophesy. Your young men will see visions, and your old men will dream dreams.
18 In those days I will pour out my Spirit even on my servants—men and women alike— and they will prophesy.

19 And I will cause wonders in the heavens above and signs on the earth below— blood and fire and clouds of smoke.
20 The sun will become dark, and the moon will turn blood red before that great and glorious day of the LORD arrives.

21 But everyone who calls on the name of the LORD will be saved.’

Introduction: Continuing on our  series in the OT- now we have the book of  Joel.
Exegesis:
A.v.16  prophetic book
& this portion was inaugurated on Pentecost-Passover celebration of the Jews (Egyptian Slavery)
B.v17 ‘In the last days,’- Phrase in the Bible you will always read, meaning starting from Pentecost & will culminate on the 2nd coming of Christ. You’ll read this phrase in the other books of the NT.
So are we in the last day? Yes.
C.‘I will pour out my Spirit. In the OT whenever the Spirit of God was placed upon people, things happen esp.for a specific task.
In the OT, this is what happens when the HS work on individuals
1        Joseph was filled with the Spirit of God (Genesis 41:37-40)
37Joseph’s suggestions were well received by Pharaoh and his officials.
38So Pharaoh asked his officials, “Can we find anyone else like this man so obviously filled with the spirit of God?”
39Then Pharaoh said to Joseph, “Since God has revealed the meaning of the dreams to you, clearly no one else is as intelligent or wise as you are.
40You will be in charge of my court, and all my people will take orders from you.
2        The craftsmen who built the tabernacle were filled with the Spirit of God (Exodus 31:1-3)
1Then the LORD said to Moses,
2“Look, I have specifically chosen Bezalel son of Uri, grandson of Hur, of the tribe of Judah.
3I have filled him with the Spirit of God, giving him great wisdom, ability, and expertise in all kinds of crafts.
3       Joshua was filled with the Spirit of God to succeed Moses (Numbers 27:18)
15 Then Moses said to the LORD,
16“O LORD, you are the God who gives breath to all creatures. Please appoint a new man as leader for the community.
17Give them someone who will guide them wherever they go and will lead them into battle, so the community of the LORD will not be like sheep without a shepherd.”
18 The LORD replied, “Take Joshua son of Nun, who has the Spirit in him, and lay your hands on him.
4       Gideon was filled with the Spirit of God  & liberated the israelites(Judges 6:34)
5        Samson was filled with the Spirit of God was given supernatural strenght (Judges 14:6, 19)

6     David was filled with the Spirit of God & became king of Israel(1 Samuel 16:13)
So as David stood there among his brothers, Samuel took the flask of olive oil he had brought and anointed David with the oil. And the Spirit of the LORD came powerfully upon David from that day on.

Acts 2 :1-12
On the day of Pentecost all the believers were meeting together...
Suddenly, there was a sound from heaven like the roaring of a mighty windstorm, and it filled the house where they were sitting…
And everyone present was filled with the Holy Spirit and began speaking in other languages...
At that time there were devout Jews from every nation living in Jerusalem.
… and they were bewildered to hear their own languages being spoken by the believers.
They were completely amazed. “How can this be?” they exclaimed. “These people are all from Galilee,
and yet we hear them speaking in our own native languages!
Here we are—Parthians, Medes, Elamites, people from Mesopotamia, Judea, Cappadocia, Pontus, the province of Asia,…
And we all hear these people speaking in our own languages about the wonderful things God has done!”
They stood there amazed and perplexed. “What can this mean?” they asked each other.
THE NEW TESTAMENT EFFECTS OF THE Pouring of the Holy Spirit.

Jn.7:37 Jesus stood and shouted to the crowds, “Anyone who is thirsty may come to me!
Anyone who believes in me may come and drink! For the Scriptures declare, ‘Rivers of living water will flow from his heart.’”
When he said “living water,” he was speaking of the Spirit, who would be given to everyone believing in him.

The Bad news: more Libyan war, Afghanistan, Terrorist Bombing etc.
2 Timothy 3 :1-5
You should know this, Timothy, that in the last days there will be very difficult times.
For people will love only themselves and their money. They will be boastful and proud, scoffing at God, disobedient to their parents, and ungrateful. They will consider nothing sacred.
They will be unloving and unforgiving; they will slander others and have no self-control. They will be cruel and hate what is good.
They will betray their friends, be reckless, be puffed up with pride, and love pleasure rather than God.
They will act religious, but they will reject the power that could make them godly.

The Good news: I will pour my spirit upon you…
Results:
21 And everyone who calls on the name of the LORD will be saved.’
Salvation & Glorification of God
