Following the Leadership of Jesus

Luke 6:46-49
46 “So why do you keep calling me ‘Lord, Lord!’ when you don’t do what I say?
47 I will show you what it’s like when someone comes to me, listens to my teaching, and then follows it.
48 It is like a person building a house who digs deep and lays the foundation on solid rock.
When the floodwaters rise and break against the house, it stands firm because it is well built.
49 But anyone who hears and doesn’t obey is like a person who builds a house without a foundation.
When the floods sweep down against that house, it will collapse into a heap of ruins.

1.Calling Jesus, Lord, means he is your Leader 110%
We can be  Oxymoron “Christians in the world                                                                                                                           v.46 “So why do you keep calling me ‘Lord, Lord!’ when you don’t do what I say
Lord – kurios – he to whom a person or thing belongs; the owner; one who has control of the person, the master
The bottom line is, if Jesus is your “Lord”, then you must do what He commands.
I’ve known people who like to pick and choose which things in Scripture they’ll obey.  You can’t do that and still call Him “Lord”.
Some people like to call Jesus a “good teacher”.  He’s much more than just an ordinary teacher.
What do you call a person who demands that you do EVERYTHING He says?  You call Him “Lord”.
Sometimes we can deceive ourselves by thinking that we’re “building on the rock” when we go to a lot of Bible Studies. Don’t get me wrong, it’s wonderful that you go to a lot of Bible Studies.
God can do a lot to wash your thoughts and cleanse your heart as you spend time in the Word.
But in the long run, going to Bible Studies isn’t going to keep your house from falling apart in the storms if you don’t put into practice the things you learn.
Jesus was surrounded by people who called him "Lord," but to call Jesus "Lord" is not the test of genuine Christianity.
The test comes when a person hears God's word as recorded in scripture with his inner ear and acts upon it.

2. Following our Leader results in building a solid foundation
v47 I will show you what it’s like when someone comes to me, listens to my teaching, and then follows it.
v48a It is like a person building a house who digs deep and lays the foundation on solid rock.
In the first story our Lord said that the wise man built his life on a solid rock. This took time, planning and effort to dig deeply to attach the building to the rock foundation.
David Gooding writes,
There is only one way to build a house secure against a storm and that is to dig deep and lay its foundations on the rock. But digging deep can be troublesome. It is all too easy to be content with a superficial knowledge of Christianity and a superficial, normal profession of faith without real obedience to Christ.
Here are some verses that we heard before & need to apply in our lives: They are all in Luke’s gospel
Luke 4:4 But Jesus told him, ‘People do not live by bread alone.’”                                                                        4:8 You must worship the LORD your God and serve only him.’                                                                       6:35 “Love your enemies! Do good to them. Lend to them without expecting to be repaid.
6:36You must be compassionate, just as your Father is compassionate.
6:37“Do not judge others, and you will not be judged.                                                                                         Do not condemn others, or it will all come back against you.                                                                       Forgive others, and you will be forgiven.
6: 38 Give, and you will receive.
3. A solid foundation results in standing firm in when trials comes.
v.48b When the floodwaters rise and break against the house, it stands firm because it is well built.
This seems to be another promise from Christ that storms, floods, & strong winds will be blowing upon the lives of even those w/the right foundation!
1.The storm of cancer upon a family member; Other sickness/ accident- disabled, child-physically/mentally challenged
2.The hurricane of debt upon your business; stocks fell, unemployed, 12 % unemployment
3.The tornado of Satan himself spinning family relationships into turmoil; Wayward son or spouse filing a divorce…
4.Earthquake of failures- failed in school- or project at work
staggering often from 1 disaster to another.
How do you recover?   Will someone help? Or none bec.we didn’t help others in the first place.
1. The storm of cancer upon a family member; Other sickness/ accident- disabled, child-physically/mentally challenged
We need to get help & strength from the Lord that’s why the passage in…
Luke 4:4 But Jesus told him, ‘People do not live by bread alone.’”                                                                        4:8 You must worship the LORD your God and serve only him.’
2.The hurricane of debt upon your business; stocks fell, unemployed, 12 % unemployment
Maybe those whom we assisted before will help us as in the ff.verses…..
6:35 “Love your enemies! Do good to them. Lend to them without expecting to be repaid.                                    6: 38 Give, and you will receive.
3.The tornado of Satan himself spinning family relationships into turmoil; Wayward son or spouse filing a divorce…
This could have been avoided if we practiced the ff. verses….
6:37“Do not judge others, and you will not be judged.                                                                                         Do not condemn others, or it will all come back against you.                                                                       Forgive others, and you will be forgiven.
4.Earthquake- failed in school- or project at work.
6:36 You must be compassionate, just as your Father is compassionate.
People will be compassionate w/ you as we are compassionate w/ others.
4. Disobedience results in building shaky/ or w/o foundation.
v.49 But anyone who hears and doesn’t obey is like a person who builds a house without a foundation.
When the floods sweep down against that house, it will collapse into a heap of ruins.
Examples of disobedience or lack of application from the previous verses:
Luke 4:4 But Jesus told him, ‘People do not live by bread alone.’”                                                                        4:8 You must worship the LORD your God and serve only him.’                                                                              Neglect God’s word, Don’t go to church
6:35 “Love your enemies! Do good to them. Lend to them without expecting to be repaid.                                    6:36You must be compassionate….
Hate them, you curse them, you wish them bad…laugh at their misfortune
6:37“Do not judge others, and you will not be judged.                                                                                         Do not condemn others, or it will all come back against you.                                                                       Forgive others, and you will be forgiven.                                                                                                          Keep on judging & condemning others- children, spouse, neighbor, officemates, class mates.
Like tsismis-gossip, backbite
6: 38 Give, and you will receive.                                                                                                                       Stingy or Give only in order to get
When the storms , floods, earthquake comes….he will collapse.
CONCLUSION:  Two men. Both have something in common, both have something different.
In common:
They both built a house
-this is talking about life.  Everyone has a life.  Everyone builds something.
They both went through storms.                                                                                                                        These are the troubles of life.  Everyone is going to go through them.                                                                       When we go through tough times, we think that something unusual is happening.  It’s actually just the norm.
The difference:
One built on Rock, the other built on “earth” (Matt. says “sand”)
You have a choice as to how you’re going to survive the storms of life.
Illustration  :      “Three Little Pigs”                                                                                                                      The first pig wanted to spend his time playing rather than building, so he built his house out of straw.  The Big Bad Wolf came and huffed and puffed and blew in the house.                                                                            The second pig built his house out of wood, and the Big Bad Wolf came and huffed and puffed and blew in that house too.                                                                                                                                                               But the third pig was willing to put in the extra hard work at building his house out of bricks, and when the Big Bad Wolf came, he huffed and he puffed, but he couldn’t blow in that house.
How are you going to choose to build your life?
Once we learn the hard way is often the best way, & the long way is often the right way, then we will find that our lives are established upon the teaching of Jesus & no storms will ever shake them.
What you do will reveal what you are.  How you live will show what you believe.
Jesus is warning people who are respectful of Him, people who will listen to Him, but who fail to follow His words.  It’s not enough to hear My commands, my  doctrine and talk about it or repeat it or admire it or discuss it or debate it or even defend it.
Do you hear Jesus saying this over and over in the gospels to His disciples?
Remember what He says in Matthew chapter 12 verse 50?  “Whoever does the will of My Father is My brother and sister and mother.”                                                                                                                                     Remember what He says in Luke 11:28?  “Blessed are those who hear the Word of God and observe it.”
Remember what He says in John 13:17?  “If you know these things, you are blessed if you do them.”  Remember what He says in John 14:24?  “He who does not love Me, does not keep My words.”
Or Paul, in Galatians 6 verses 7 and 8 says, “Do not be deceived.  God is not mocked.  For whatever a man sows, this he also will reap.”                                                                                                                                 And John says, in 1 John 2:3, “We know that we have come to know Him if we keep His commandments.”
And the tests and the storms and the trials and finally the Last Judgment, will make clear what the foundation of all our lives is.
Once their house is built, it is nearly impossible to tell its quality since they all look alike on the outside.
In time, however, the houses are tested by the sudden floods, storms and winds of life which appear as trials, temptations, tragedies, illnesses and deaths. This will be the test of the house's stability.

During normal life they look the same outwardly; but they were far different because of their foundation.
In your next storm will you stand firm or fall flat?                                                                                             What we are building is tested today by the storms of life, but there will be a final & greater testing at the judgment seat of Christ.
Ever take short cuts & pay for it later?                                                                                                            “Happy is the man who sees things, not in the light of the moment, but in the light of eternity!”
